Taking the New Mexico QSO Party on the Road
Mobile stations are one of the most exciting parts of the New Mexico QSO Party. Each year, operators take to the road with radios installed in their vehicles and activate counties across the state as they travel.
These stations are essential to the success of the event. New Mexico has 33 counties, many of which have small populations and few active amateur radio operators. Mobile operators help ensure that stations across the country have the opportunity to work as many New Mexico counties as possible during the contest.
Whether you plan to activate one or two nearby counties or drive a route that covers a dozen or more, mobile operation is a fun and rewarding way to participate in NMQP.
What Is a Mobile Station?
In the New Mexico QSO Party, a mobile station is a radio station installed in or on a movable vehicle. The station must operate using equipment that remains attached to the vehicle and can move to another location without disconnecting antennas or wiring.
Typical mobile vehicles include:
- Cars and trucks
- RVs and camper vans
- Bicycles or motorcycles
- Other vehicles capable of carrying a complete radio station
Mobile stations may operate while parked or while moving between counties, but for safety reasons operators should only operate when the vehicle is safely parked or when a dedicated driver is present.
Why Mobile Stations Matter
Mobile operators play a unique role in the New Mexico QSO Party. By traveling between counties during the contest, they help activate areas that might otherwise remain silent.
Mobile stations can:
- Activate multiple counties in a single contest
- Provide rare multipliers for stations around the world
- Add excitement as stations follow their progress across the state
- Help ensure that all 33 New Mexico counties appear on the air
Many participants enjoy tracking mobile operators and working them again as they move into new counties.
County Line Operations
Some mobile operators choose to operate from county lines, where two counties meet. When positioned at a valid county line location, contacts with the mobile station may count for both counties.
County line operation must follow standard County Hunter practices, and only two counties may be counted for the same contact even if multiple county boundaries meet at the same location.
Operating from county lines can be an efficient way to provide additional multipliers during the contest.
The Mobile Operations Bonus
To recognize the effort required for mobile operation across a large state, the New Mexico QSO Party offers a Mobile Operations Bonus. New Mexico mobile stations receive 5,000 bonus points for each county from which they make at least 15 valid QSOs during the contest.
This bonus rewards mobile operators who successfully activate multiple counties and contribute to statewide activity.
Planning a Mobile Route
Experienced rovers often plan their routes carefully before the contest begins. Factors to consider include:
- Counties that rarely appear on the air
- Driving distances between counties
- Available operating locations
- Terrain and road access
Some operators focus on activating a cluster of nearby counties, while others design ambitious routes that cross large portions of the state.
Even activating just a few counties can make a meaningful contribution to the event.
Getting Started with Mobile Operation
If you have never tried mobile operation before, the New Mexico QSO Party is a great place to start.
A simple mobile setup might include:
- An HF mobile radio
- A vehicle-mounted antenna
- A logging device or notebook
- Power supplied by the vehicle’s electrical system
Many operators start by activating one or two counties near home, then expand their routes in future years.
